The Woman Behind the Glasses
Hi, I’m Amber.
I’m a marketer, storyteller, millennial, wife, mom, chronic overthinker, volunteer, board member and someone who has never been particularly good at having just one thing going on at a time.
I’ve spent my career in marketing and communications, working across different organizations and industries, building brands, creating campaigns, telling stories, solving problems and occasionally explaining that marketing is, in fact, much more than making things look pretty. Although I do make a mean PowerPoint.
“I genuinely love what I do.”
I love the psychology behind why people care. I love taking a complicated idea and making it make sense. I love finding the story nobody else noticed. I love strategy, branding, writing, creative direction and that moment when a random idea in your head finally becomes something real.
Today, I lead Marketing & Communications in the nonprofit world, specifically in child welfare and family services. And that chapter of my career has changed me in ways I didn’t expect.
When the stories behind your marketing involve real children, real families, real hardships, real second chances, and employees who dedicate their careers to helping people through some of the hardest moments of their lives, you start looking at the work differently.
Marketing can still be fun. It can still be clever and creative and strategic. But it can also mean something.
“Then there’s the rest of me.”
I’m a millennial who grew up believing adulthood would eventually arrive with some sort of instruction manual. Still waiting on that. I’m a wife. I’m a mom to a little girl who has completely changed the way I see the world. I’m working on my master’s degree in marketing because apparently having a career and a toddler wasn’t keeping me busy enough.
I’m ambitious. I love my career. I also love my family more than anything. And I’m learning that those things don’t have to compete with each other.
There are seasons when I feel like I’m absolutely crushing it and seasons when I’m answering emails while reheating the same cup of coffee for the third time. There are big career goals I still want to accomplish. Places I want to see. Things I want to create. A little girl I want to raise to believe she can do really big things.
And somewhere in the middle of all of that is… life.
“That’s why I created The Work Between.”
Because I’ve realized that some of the most interesting parts of our lives happen between the things we put on our résumés. Between the promotions. Between the campaigns. Between the big milestones. Between becoming someone’s wife, someone’s mom, someone’s boss, someone’s coworker and still figuring out who you are in the middle of all those titles.
This is where I write about marketing and leadership, nonprofit work and career growth, motherhood and millennial life, things I’ve learned, things I’m still learning and probably a few things that annoy me enough that I need to write about them! I’m not here because I have adulthood, motherhood, leadership or life figured out.
Quite the opposite.
“I’m just paying attention while I figure it out.”
And writing about what I see along the way. So, welcome. This is life through my Amber-colored glasses. And all the work that happens in between.
